Today, we are living in the single greatest time to be alive in the history of humanity. If you were born just 200 years ago, which is a blink really, you’d probably be working in the fields or down a cold mine. Or you’d live till 40… if you were lucky.
Now, life is abundant. Food, knowledge and technology is abundant. This is a crazy fucking time to be alive!
And yet I have found myself maybe not as far ahead as I would like, and the reason for that has been my lack of commitment previously. In this post, I’m going to tell you why your lack of commitment is killing you.
You see, go on to Instagram, and you’ll find the most successful people in the world, in different spheres, that will inspire you in different ways.
When you’re young you can decide to do anything, and have a good chance of achieving it (depending on how ambitious you are of course, as well as how gifted and hardworking you are). However, there comes a point where you have to sacrifice the idea of doing anything, and committing to one, two or three things MAXIMUM.
Because the truth is, beyond those few things, it’s too much for one to take on. It’s just too much of a challenge. There are not enough hours in the day. And if you spend three hours a day on an activity, and the other person spends six hours a day on an activity, assuming all hours are equal, the other person is going to destroy you in acquiring those skillsets, and also in the marketplace.
That’s why, honestly, I don’t have a hobby.
What I mean by that, is that I don’t spend time on activities that I’m not going to be absolutely fucking great at. Yes, I love football. But I’m not going to be a professional footballer at this point, am I? So I don’t play football at all, not even for a kickabout.
I only partake in activities in which I can be incredible.
You get to a certain age, maybe in your late teens, early twenties or mid-twenties, where you have to decide.
The word ‘decide’ derives from Latin which means to cut.
You literally have to cut off other possibilities and commit yourself to an area. Because if you don’t decide you’ll be left in the grey area. And the grey area is the land of the mediocre, where you’re not really achieving anything, but you half-assing shit enough to justify to yourself ‘yeah I’m alright.’
The grey zone area is the shit that I’m most afraid of. I’m fucking so scared of the grey zone because it is there where I will lose my dreams. It is there where I will waste years of my life in mediocrity. It is there where I am a shadow of the person that I want to become.
That’s why it’s so important to commit and decide on maybe one, two but maximum three areas of your life that you wish to dominate. Beyond that, you’re going to be too spread thin.
I think the biggest blessing that we have as human beings is that we get to choose our sacrifices. We don’t get to not make one. But we can decide which one to make, which gives meaning to our lives.
So, my friend, question yourself. What one or two or three areas would you like to succeed in? Write them down. And now go execute.
